I had my first official restaurant outing as gluten-free. I downloaded an app called “Find Me Gluten Free”. You can look up different restaurants by category, proximity, most celiac friendly, and dedicated gluten free. After helping my dad with some yard and house work, we were craving some meat. We decided on Blue Oak BBQ. I hadn’t had them in a couple of years.
I saw some reviews on the app that said Blue Oak had some options that were safe for me. I felt like I knew what would be ok, but I still asked the gentleman behind the register. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about what I could eat. Most of the meats were safe, except the ribs. There were only 2 sides that were ok to eat, which was fine by me. Sadly, I couldn’t have my baked beans, but I ordered the Ginger Sesame Slaw and the Sour Cream and Onion Potato Salad. For the protein, I ordered the sliced brisket. I settled on a sweet tea with lemon to drink.

The brisket was delicious and tender, with a nice fat lining on the top. I asked my dad if I could change my favorite food to meat fat. I mean, look at that gorgeous pink smoke ring on the edge of the meat! I stayed away from the in-house bbq sauces since I wasn’t sure what was in them. I could’ve asked, but I was happy with my simple plate. The potato salad was pretty good. I’m not a fan of raw onions, so I steeled myself to pick them out. Thankfully, they used green onions, which don’t have as harsh of a flavor. I could have done without the parsley. I don’t think it added anything to the potato salad and the texture wasn’t pleasant. The slaw wasn’t very flavorful, but it worked nicely as a palate cleanser between bites. I’ve never been one for coleslaw, mainly because all of the mayonnaise that goes into it. This one was more refreshing and didn’t have any lingering mayo flavor.
I ate quite a bit. I didn’t eat all of it though. This was the most food I’ve eaten in a while, which I take as a good sign. Since I have taken gluten out of my diet, I have been hungrier than usual. I’m glad that I made this spot my first gluten free restaurant experience. I’ll be posting this review a day later than when I went to eat if I have any reaction to the food. If I do, it’ll be added as a postscript. If not, feel free to go try them out!
